Karla’s Korner: Learning to Love and not Hate

Learning to Love and not Hate……

On Thursday morning I saw this posted on Planting Peace’s Facebook page and immediately shared it on my own. Throughout the day I thought of the words on this picture and just how true they are. In the past several months there have been numerous tragic events involving school and workplace shootings, kidnappings, killings, suicides as a result of bullying and much more. Each time I hear of these situations my heart aches for the families of all involved. As difficult as it is to have a loved one taken away as a result of hate crimes I wonder how the parents of the perpetrator feel. What parent wants to know that their child has committed a horrific crime all in the name of hate? This past week the mother of a seven year old little boy made him a Klu Klux Klan costume for him to wear for Halloween. Naturally this made the local news and a firestorm has rippled through their community and throughout my state. This mother defends her right to do whatever she wants and has openly shared her support of the KKK and what she believes is normal behavior. Of course she has a right to dress her son in whatever she wants for Halloween, however, she is doing nothing more than teaching her little boy how to hate.Continue reading

Allowing our Children to Grow Up….

Two years ago this week I sat down in front of my computer with my eyes so full of tears I could barely see and an ache in my heart so deep I thought I could barely stand it. I had just taken my daughter to college for the first time. This week my girl loaded up her car kissed me good-bye and set out to move herself and most of her things to college by herself. I followed the next day with a few boxes she couldn’t fit in her car, an envelope with some spending money in it and her guitar. Two years has certainly changed things. She has proven that she can take care of herself and although she does things differently than I do at times I understand that she has earned the right to do so.Continue reading

Karla’s Korner: Not Me

I am proud to introduce a new column to Madame Deals! I think we all need a touch point a place we can go to be inspired. Karla is my children’s teacher, a good friend, and a person with a heart of gold. I hope that her words will inspire you to do more. We are only as good as the people we surround ourselves with. It is important to listen with your heart and proceed with your eyes open. Enjoy!

Not Me…

My son and I found ourselves glued to the television Friday evening watching A & E’s Parking Wars. As I flipped through the channels he noted that there are a lot of “wars” shows on and wondered why. My first instinct was to give him my classic “I don’t know” answer because I was tired and just wanted to sit quietly and escape from the realities of my own life to watch the realities of someone else’s. Trust me, after watching for a while I find myself thankful for the troubles I have. As we watched several episodes (4 to be exact) we came to the conclusion that somewhere somebody is parking peoples cars illegally thus causing them to get parking tickets because nobody would admit to doing it themselves. Quite often, the parking officer would get the blame; darn those parking officers! It amazes me at just how many people denied knowing anything about their tickets or unpaid citations. Maybe the police should launch an investigation and try to catch the parking bandit who causes all of these problems because these poor people have absolutely no idea how it all happened.Continue reading

A Love Letter to My Children

As I sit here in the quiet of our home, one of you is away at college and the other in hidden away in the security of your bedroom. Knowing that it is not cool to hang out with your parents who still hold hands and snuggle on the couch occasionally, you choose to stay tucked away in the safe confines of video games, television and reading books on your Nook. As Valentine’s Day approaches this week, I want to tell you a few things about love. No, not mushy romantic love, but the love I have for you. So here goes:Continue reading
