Simple Fun Recipes for Kids: Brownie Mix Fix-Ups

Simple Fun Recipes for Kids

When it comes to simple fun recipes for kids, it’s hard to beat brownies from a boxed mix. Mix the ingredients, pour the batter into a pan, and in just minutes you’re done and the kids are licking the bowl!

My kids and I love to make this simple activity a little more exciting by creating our own “fix-ups” for our store-bought brownie mix. You can frost your brownies, swirl your finished batter with cream cheese or caramel, or add nuts, marshmallow, or candy pieces – and these are just a few of the things you can try!

My daughter wanted to bring brownies to school for her birthday celebration. I bought a box of brownie mix, and she and her sister decided to fix up the boxed mix with chocolate syrup and a whole bag of chocolate chips.

Ingredients

  • 1 box brownie mix family size
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup chocolate syrup
  • 1 bag chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat oven according to the directions on the brownie mix box.
  • Coat your pan thoroughly with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Prepare brownie mix according to package directions, but replace the water with chocolate sauce. Add a small amount of water if your batter seems too thick.
  • Stir in a bag of chocolate chips.
  • Cook brownies according to package directions.
  • Let cool in the pan before serving.

And that’s all there is to it! Be sure to watch your brownies closely as they cook, since the change in ingredients may alter the cooking time. I overcooked mine a bit and ended up with crispy edges. But once we trimmed off the edges, they were delicious! Our recipe got rave reviews from my daughter’s classmates, teachers, and even some moms who were visiting the class. And my girls got the added bonus of showing off the recipe that they created! My first grader wrote the recipe down and brought it school to share with her friends. She calls it “The Super Secret Recipe for the Best Brownies Ever.”

How do you fix up your store-bought brownie mix? I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments below.
