5 Simple ways using a laptop can help your child in school

I understand we want our children to play outside. We want them to interact with the universe, but there is also a lot of learning to be done online. I have found as a teacher that technology is often able to seamlessly bridge the gap between a student that is performing highly and one that isn’t. That is because we all learn differently. There is a multitude of road blocks that often prevent students from achieving the greatness that they are capable, and some are as simple as overcoming their fear. I highly suggest this laptop from HP.

I have seen struggling writers blossom with the introduction of a computer because of the spell check functionality. Students often skip over thoughts or ideas because they can’t spell them, so their stories are bland and simply written. I also highly suggest Grammarly for any age. I start my students out using google docs they are both free, and they are easy to share. I have a google doc with my children where they write me notes, and I respond. This is a fun activity that teaches them not only how to use google docs, how to communicate in writing, but it easily connects us in a nonverbal communication which teaches them how important word choice and punctuation is in writing.

What if you have a child that struggles in math or one that loves math? I suggest coding. They are already playing games that rely on coding why not teach them how to make them. Talk about preparing children for the future. Did you know that there are an astonishing amount of jobs in technology left open each year because there aren’t enough people to take them? I suggest Code.org. I have found that my students with disabilities often took off once they were introduced to coding. They left me breathless with their abilities to replicate the instruction and figure out the patterns. We all have unique abilities and coding seemed to be a good fit for my students. You can also checkout some additional math activities on Xtramath.org.

How about your reluctant reader? I have done tons of visit using location documents where the students are asked to find ten facts based on the questions I asked. You wouldn’t believe how excited they were to move from web page to web page to discover the truth on a particular subject. You can also use sites that read to your children or offer free books for them to read. These are two great ones. Zing and Storyonline.

How else can a child use technology? Why not allow them to help you with your family budget using a spreadsheet. How about having them create your weekly grocery list. How about tracking what you eat and what you haven’t eaten in a week. How about figuring out the actual cost of a meal using the ingredients bought at the store. There is a lot that can be done on a computer to cultivate real-life skills. We use our computer to teach budgeting to our children, and we allow them to manage their bank accounts online. We have even taught our oldest to write a check and deposit it into his account.

The last way that I highly suggest using a laptop to contribute your child’s learning is to have them help you plan a day out. I have them make us an itinerary figure out a budget. They learn about time, money for events, driving distance, menu prices, planning, and then we review the plan together before and after it happens. It is a great way to research new places and develop more life skills that they will need in the future.

Children are endless oceans waiting to be filled with information. I find that computers allow children to learn at their own pace in a way that makes sense to them. There are infinite ways a laptop can enable a student. I allow my children to use their laptop on sites that I have bookmarked for their consumption. HP laptops are a valuable tool because your child can do everything, from author a book on it, design a website, code a new game, to create an interactive presentation that they can share on their HP laptop. Technology is so important to the world and your child, and HP computers are both affordable and resourceful.
