Karla’s Korner: A Letter to My Friend

I am proud to introduce a new column to Madame Deals! I think we all need a touch point a place we can go to be inspired. Karla is my children’s teacher, a good friend, and a person with a heart of gold. I hope that her words will inspire you to do more. We are only as good as the people we surround ourselves with. It is important to listen with your heart and proceed with your eyes open. Enjoy!

Dear Devon,

As I write this letter, you are preparing to move on to another phase in your life. In a few short months you will give birth to a new baby, adding to the already precious “brood” you have at home. Your family is growing and they need you at home which means you will be packing up your tote bag one last time and leaving the classroom next to mine. And while I know this is a necessary move for you I want you to know just how much I will miss you being there every day. Of course, we will always remain friends but your daily presence will definitely be missed.

In the time that we’ve worked together you have kept me on my toes both professionally and personally. There were days when I needed to be reminded what was truly important and other times I needed your encouragement to just let things go. You have often helped me stay focused on important personal matters allowing me to vent, cry, pout or just stay silent letting me know that you are there if I needed you. I have tried to do the same for you and have always known that the confidences we shared would never go beyond the confines of our friendship.

As I have watched you teach this year I have often times wished I had your presence and grace. You’ve taught little boys to ask to go to the bathroom instead of yell across the room “hey I have to pee” and little girls to sit like a lady and not show everyone their new Dora underpants. You stressed the importance of waiting your turn, table manners and that time outs are necessary for us to learn a lesson. There were silly songs to sing, colors, shapes and letters to learn and you did it all with creativity and dedication and while your children learned so much know that I did too!

Our conversations about faith, life, marriage, relationships, parenting and everything in between have meant so much to me. It’s because of you that I can now make an awesome chicken pot pie; for that my family thanks you. You have become my sister in every sense of the word. So as you pack up your stuff, turn in your keys and walk out the door for the last time, I want you to know that because of you my life is better. Thank you for being the person you are and never allowing anything or anyone to change that.

So as I wipe the tears away knowing that this is our last few days as co-workers I celebrate the fact that our friendship will always be. Eleanor Roosevelt once said “Many people will walk in and out of your life but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.” You my dear friend have left a huge footprint on my heart; one that will always be there. I love you oh so much and look forward to whatever the future holds….

Much love and friendship,
Karla
