Did someone say football? I will admit I picked my college not based on academics but based on the size and breadth of the stadium. I walked into Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, and I felt like I had gone to heaven. I live, eat, and breathe football sometimes I lose my breath while watching football. You guys, It’s true! And I’ve come to accept and embrace that I would rather watch football than anything else when it comes to fall. That means I do a lot of sitting because let’s face it the only thing I run is my mouth. I can, however, catch pretty well since my kids throw everything at me that they can.
I tell you all of this because if I am sitting in front of the TV on the weekend, I need to make sure I am eating healthy. That is why I love these Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwiches and stadium veggie cups I make for our family tailgating party. They are easy to make, tastes great, and are easy to feed a crowd. I assume you could use this same basic recipe for any lunch meat, but the ham has the best flavor. I just love these Healthy Tailgating Recipes.
Healthy Tailgating Recipes
The first thing you need to do is view your Weekly Ad or get the savings delivered right to your email box Smart Shopper Email Club. There is nothing worse than wasting money. I also love to take advantage of all their fresh produce. I make sure what I buy will not only work on Saturday afternoon or night when we watch college football but for my family for the rest of the week as well. You can never have enough healthy items in your home. You can quickly freeze vegetables so when Save-A-Lot runs a sale go and stock up. I will say their prices are so budget friendly on a daily basis. The second thing you need to do is come up with a couple of Healthy Tailgating Recipes. I chose to prepare two things because my kids need to eat their vegetable and I was craving a Hot Ham and Cheese. Head to Save-A-Lot to purchase every item on your list.
Here is how to make my Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwiches
– Sliced Ham
– Sliced Swiss Cheese (You can pick what ever flavor makes you happy
– Stoneground Mustard
– 1/3 Cup Melted Butter (I left this out to make it healthy)
– 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce (I put this on mine but my kids weren’t into it)
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Cut your rolls in 1/2 and place the bottom half in a nonstick pan.
Step 2: Put the Mustard on the roll (You can add the Worchestire sauce here if you like it)
Step 3: Put the Swiss cheese on the bun
Step 4: Fold the ham and then place the ham on top of the cheese
Step 5: Top the Hot Ham and cheese with the bun
Step 6: Bake your hot ham and cheese sandwiches in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Slice and serve!
These Vegetable cups are an even easier Healthy Tailgating recipe and take full advantage of the produce at Save- A- Lot.
Step: 1 Grab a cup or glass
Step 2: Put in some dressing at the bottom (ranch, blue cheese, french you pick)
Step 3: Cut the vegetable
Step 4: Get sticks to pierce veggies
Step 5: Pierce veggies/ meat (I used meat I cooked the night before for dinner (repurposing leftovers)
Step 6: Get fancy I used a shoe book to create a stage and then I put my veggie cups on platforms so the kids would race to get theirs.
Scream: Who’s hungry? You see with Save-A-Lot you can feed everyone on your budget. They make each event special whether it is breaking your daily bread or cheering for your favorite team. They have you covered for your tailgating needs.
