Fall Fashion Trends – The spotlight is on aubergine!

This is a Fashionista Event Opportunity, and is hosted by Still Blonde after all these YEARS and Modly Chic.

Are you ready for fall fashion? Ready or not fall is fast approaching and this fall bold colors are going to be one of the hottest trends. I have to admit I am a stay safe with neutrals and muted shades kinda girl but I just love love love one of the hot colors this fall – aubergine – and I really want to include it in my fall wardrobe. So to get comfortable and confident with color I am adding it to my wardrobe a splash at a time.

Fall Fashion Trends – The spotlight is on aubergine!

Aubergine is a easy color to work into your wardrobe for us gals who like the neutrals especially gray. To show you how I am going to update my fall wardrobe with aubergine I did a little shopping at Monroe and Main. I picked out and ordered this fabulous Street Chic Sweater because comfortable chunky sweaters will also be trendy this fall. Fashion Tip: Don’t feel like you need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe every season. You can add one or two trendy pieces and reuse them in different outfits to create several different looks without breaking the bank. So yes, the sweater is mostly grey however it has several splashes of aubergine. Remember, I am color shy and need to take baby steps.

First look: Comfy Casual

monroe and main casual outfit with splashes of aubergine

This look is inspired by the cooler temperatures of fall and getting cozy and comfortable. It is totally casual and totally comfortable while giving me the boost of confidence from my favorite fall color aubergine. To get this look I put the sweater on over a pair of grey leggings and an aubergine t-shirt, added some ballet flats, and some chunky earrings. Remember ladies- leggings are not pants! So make sure you keep your sweater buttoned when wearing it over your leggings.

Second look – Date night or girl’s night out

Monroe and Main Color Confidence with a splash of aubergine

My new sweater also goes nicely with jeans and boots and lord knows we love our boots, right? So same Street Chic sweater, same -t shirt now add some jeans and your favorite boots. That’s it so easy to totally switch up your look. With this option you can wear the sweater open or closed since you have jeans on and not leggings.  Perfect for day into evening because you can button up when it starts to get chilly. Wearing the sweater open adds more of the great aubergine color to the look and I think it is just the right amount of color for me. I love this outfit and feel great in it. I think aubergine is a great color for fall.

Help One Child Succeed in School

Disclosure: This opportunity to give back to my community was made possible by our sponsors Wonderful Pistachios, Wonderful Almonds and Fiji Water.

As part of our third annual Giving Back Packs Campaign I am fortunate enough to participate along with fellow bloggers to donate a back pack full of schools supplies to help one child in need. Why school suppplies? Why do we organize this project? Read more about our project here —–> Giving Back Packs

Giving Back Packs

I decided that not only was this a great way for me to give back but also an opportunity to teach my children about others who have less than we do and how important it is to share our blessing to help one child get the essential tools they need to succeed in school.

Giving Back Packs Shopping for school supplies

So I explained how we asked our sponsors to help us and with our $25 gift card from the folks at Wonderful Pistachios, Wonderful Almonds and Fiji Water we headed to the store to buy school supplies. I turned this into a math refresher and had my son to keep track of how much we were spending by adding up the cost of the items they picked out.

Our sponsors donated a back pack, a box of Wonderful Almonds, a box of Wonderful Pistachios, two bottles of water, and a $25 gift card to be used to purchase school supplies. We took advantage of a buy one get half off sale at our local store to buy as many school supplies as possible with our $25.

I was thrilled that our sponsors also wanted to send us some of their products to include in the back packs. They generously embraced our project and have overwhelmed me with their support. Full bellies also help children succeed in school. Wonderful Pistachios are the perfect snack for kids heading back to school. They are both nutritious and delicious. Even better they are fun to eat, I know my own children LOVE cracking open pistachios. Wonderful Pistachios come in a variety of flavors including Roasted & Salted, Sweet Chili and Salt & Pepper. Both Wonderful Pistachios and Wonderful Almonds come in handy tubes that are easy to pack in lunchboxes and also great for after school snacks. Staying hydrated is also so very important for our kids as they exercise their bodies and minds everyday. Fiji Water comes in a convenient 330mL which is a perfect size for lunch boxes and taking to school sports events.

I am so inspired by the generosity of our sponsors and the impact that I believe our project will have as so many bloggers participate to help one child in their communities. If each of us jest help one child think of the impact that it will have. If many people each throw just one small pebble in the same pond a huge ripple is created and that ripple reaches farther than we can imagine. I am donating our back pack to an incredible ministry called Hands Up Ministries. In a nutshell Hands Up Ministries is all about giving a hand up not a hand out. They preserve the dignity of the folks they serve and teach them how to help themselves by not giving anything away for free but by charging minimally (very minimally for the products they provide). The folks they serve take ownership and and pride in being able to get what they need for themselves. The ministry also focuses on the very true concept that every human being deserves to be loved. The most important thing they give is hugs (no charge for those) and love and acceptance. They acknowledge and openly share with all they serve that we are all more alike then we are different and that none is less deserving of love than any one of us. I hope you will go read about this ministry and if moved to do so will help them continue to serve the Highland Parks Community in Richmond VA. What this ministry needs the most is monetary donations so they can continue to buy homes, fix them up, then rent them to folks who are homeless. The rent is low and an amount that the family can afford. This follows the principal that people need a hand up not a hand out.

Will you join us in our mission to help children succeed in school by providing them with the tools they need? Will you help one child? We would love to hear about it! Let’s share so we can hopefully inspire others to give a helping hand up to others!

Special treats for our four legged friends

Disclosure: This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #NudgeThemBack #CollectiveBias

I used to tell people that I am just not a dog person. I did not want a furry four legged friend.  Used to…then came a furry fluffy beast who bounded into our lives and our hearts. Meet Speedo!

Tips for caring for our four legged friend

That was Speedo almost 2 years ago when we first brought him home. Note: I wanted to name him chocolate chip but my son wanted to name him Speedo after his favorite swim suit, go figure.

Our four legged friend as a puppy

I am huge believer in rescuing dogs and adopting from local shelters but I have horrible allergies to all breeds of dogs except for special breeds deemed hypoallergenic. Speedo is a cockapoo – half cocker spaniel and half poodle. He has beautiful brown and white curly fur but does not shed. And miraculously I am not allergic to him. My boys were so happy to finally be able to have a dog.

Speedo snuggled up

In the past 2 years Speedo has become a member of our family. He and my youngest son are just like brothers. They wrestle and play and snuggle. Speedo LOVES to snuggle.

Our four legged friend laying in the grass

Speedo is also a very smart dog. He can shake hands, give us high fives, sit, dance, and jump on command. He can catch balls and fetch. Recently we have been trying to teach him to go through tunnels. So how were we able to teach Speedo all this tricks? We use positive reinforcement that includes verbal praise, physical touch (petting and hugs), and of course treats. We just tried Nudges Grillers and Sizzlers for the first time, Speedo loves them. Doing tricks and playing games with us helps keep Speedo from getting bored. Dogs that are bred tend to be naughty, they might chew things or get into things. It is also important to make sure your dog gets enough exercise. That means lots of walks and running in the yard.

We love to include Speedo in all our activities and he joins us for cooking out on the deck and he loves to go camping with us. With Nudges Grillers Speedo can have a grillers treat while we enjoy our dinner from the grill. Good nutrition is key to a happy healthy dog. We use treats to motivate, reward, and show our dog love so we need to make sure we choose our dogs treats carefully. I love that Nudges Grillers have no artificial preservatives and are made in the USA with only USA-sourced protein.

Turns out Speedo is also a ham. We took him to the dog park to work on the tunnel trick. I brought my camera hoping to capture him coming out of the tunnel. He was not interested in the tunnel but he did pose for lots of pictures with his new Nudges Grillers treats.

I also think it is so important for dogs to play with other dogs. They need socialization as much as we do. Speedo is a very friendly dog. He enjoys playing with his friends at the dog park and in our neighborhood. Speedo shared some of his new Chicken and Bacon flavored Nudges Sizzlers with his friend Ruby. Of course he asked Ruby’s owner if it was okay to share first!

If you are looking for a special treat for your four legged furry family member, give Nudges a try, your fur baby will thank you with an extra snuggle. You can pick up the new Nudges Grillers and Sizzlers at Walmart. Walmart also has the Nudges Jerky cuts in a new 36oz value size. Check out all the flavors at nudgesdogtreats.com and let me know which one you think your dog would love the most!Nudges aisle

The Moscow Mule! Reviving a Classic!

Summer is coming! I know it is a little hard to believe after a long cold snowy winter in many parts of the country but soon enough we will all be complaining about the heat and humidity. Even those of us who worship the sun and vow not to complain will at some point wither in the heat of our favorite season. I have found the perfect summer drink to cool you down, a Moscow Mule!

The Moscow Mule is a true classic summer chiller

What is a Moscow Mule?

I know I had the same question the first time I heard of it. So I did a little research. The term mule (or sometimes buck) refers to a family of mixed drinks that use ginger or ginger beer.  The Moscow Mule was a popular drink in the 1950’s. The combination an unknown liquor initially unpopular in the US with ginger beer (that itself was not selling too well) in a fancy copper mug became a huge success. The copper mug is the signature serving glass and also keeps the drink very cold making this a perfect cocktail for hot summer evenings! The Moscow Mule was name as such because of a common misconception that vodka is largely imported from Russia. This is not the case but the name stuck. Just try to find Russian vodka at the liquor store, good luck!

Do you need sunscreen when skiing?

Do you need sunscreen when you are skiing

As I am I trying to warm up on this cold winter night,  summer seems like a distant memory. I know though that it will roll around again soon enough and I will be desperately trying to find some relief from the heat. But while I am not sporting my flip flops just yet I am thinking about sunscreen. Why am I thinking about sunscreen? Because we are going skiing this weekend. Do you need sunscreen when skiing? YES! When you are on the slopes the sun is not only shining on you directly but it is also reflecting off the snow. This can cause sun burn very quickly if you are not applying sunscreen to any exposed skin. Many skiiers and snowboards never even think about the dangers of the sun when they are on the mountain but I have young kids and believe strongly in protecting their skin.

Listerine Mouthwash 21-Day Challenge

Disclosure: “I received LISTERINE® Brand products and a Walgreens gift card from Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc. and The Motherhood as part of my participation in the LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.”

listerine products help oral care 21 day challenge rinse with mouthwash

Do you brush once a day? Twice a day? More? Do you brush for 1 minute? 2 minutes? 3 minutes? Do you use mouth rinse every time you brush? Do you floss everyday? As you are reading these questions how does your mouth feel? Are you going to go brush your teeth right now? Go ahead…I will wait until you get back. But come back as soon as you are done brushing because this is important stuff.

No matter how many times a day your brush brushing still misses about 75% of your mouth. I was surprised to hear this. It also causes me some concern because (head hung down in shame as I admit this) while I always brush twice a day, I don’t floss regularly and I don’t use mouthwash regularly. I know some of you are thinking…gross! And you are right. But maybe some of you are just like me and are doing the bare minimum when it comes to taking care of your oral hygiene.  I have always used the excuse that I am just to busy to take the time to floss and have never really thought much about mouthwash. When I do use mouth wash I use it to freshen my breath not to clean my mouth and teeth. I do always get my teethed cleaned at the dentist office every 6 months, with a fluoride treatment every other visit. New habits are hard to create but I am determined to take better care of my teeth, gums, and mouth. Seriously, I floss my kids teeth, I think it is time I start flossing my own. I am going to take it one step further and start rinsing twice a day with Listerine mouthwash. Clearly brushing is not enough. You NEED mouthwash to get the places brushing has missed.
