I used to tell people that I am just not a dog person. I did not want a furry four legged friend. Used to…then came a furry fluffy beast who bounded into our lives and our hearts. Meet Speedo!
That was Speedo almost 2 years ago when we first brought him home. Note: I wanted to name him chocolate chip but my son wanted to name him Speedo after his favorite swim suit, go figure.
I am huge believer in rescuing dogs and adopting from local shelters but I have horrible allergies to all breeds of dogs except for special breeds deemed hypoallergenic. Speedo is a cockapoo – half cocker spaniel and half poodle. He has beautiful brown and white curly fur but does not shed. And miraculously I am not allergic to him. My boys were so happy to finally be able to have a dog.
In the past 2 years Speedo has become a member of our family. He and my youngest son are just like brothers. They wrestle and play and snuggle. Speedo LOVES to snuggle.
Speedo is also a very smart dog. He can shake hands, give us high fives, sit, dance, and jump on command. He can catch balls and fetch. Recently we have been trying to teach him to go through tunnels. So how were we able to teach Speedo all this tricks? We use positive reinforcement that includes verbal praise, physical touch (petting and hugs), and of course treats. We just tried Nudges Grillers and Sizzlers for the first time, Speedo loves them. Doing tricks and playing games with us helps keep Speedo from getting bored. Dogs that are bred tend to be naughty, they might chew things or get into things. It is also important to make sure your dog gets enough exercise. That means lots of walks and running in the yard.
We love to include Speedo in all our activities and he joins us for cooking out on the deck and he loves to go camping with us. With Nudges Grillers Speedo can have a grillers treat while we enjoy our dinner from the grill. Good nutrition is key to a happy healthy dog. We use treats to motivate, reward, and show our dog love so we need to make sure we choose our dogs treats carefully. I love that Nudges Grillers have no artificial preservatives and are made in the USA with only USA-sourced protein.
Turns out Speedo is also a ham. We took him to the dog park to work on the tunnel trick. I brought my camera hoping to capture him coming out of the tunnel. He was not interested in the tunnel but he did pose for lots of pictures with his new Nudges Grillers treats.
I also think it is so important for dogs to play with other dogs. They need socialization as much as we do. Speedo is a very friendly dog. He enjoys playing with his friends at the dog park and in our neighborhood. Speedo shared some of his new Chicken and Bacon flavored Nudges Sizzlers with his friend Ruby. Of course he asked Ruby’s owner if it was okay to share first!
If you are looking for a special treat for your four legged furry family member, give Nudges a try, your fur baby will thank you with an extra snuggle. You can pick up the new Nudges Grillers and Sizzlers at Walmart. Walmart also has the Nudges Jerky cuts in a new 36oz value size. Check out all the flavors at nudgesdogtreats.com and let me know which one you think your dog would love the most!
Summer is coming! I know it is a little hard to believe after a long cold snowy winter in many parts of the country but soon enough we will all be complaining about the heat and humidity. Even those of us who worship the sun and vow not to complain will at some point wither in the heat of our favorite season. I have found the perfect summer drink to cool you down, a Moscow Mule!
I know I had the same question the first time I heard of it. So I did a little research. The term mule (or sometimes buck) refers to a family of mixed drinks that use ginger or ginger beer. The Moscow Mule was a popular drink in the 1950’s. The combination an unknown liquor initially unpopular in the US with ginger beer (that itself was not selling too well) in a fancy copper mug became a huge success. The copper mug is the signature serving glass and also keeps the drink very cold making this a perfect cocktail for hot summer evenings! The Moscow Mule was name as such because of a common misconception that vodka is largely imported from Russia. This is not the case but the name stuck. Just try to find Russian vodka at the liquor store, good luck!
As I am I trying to warm up on this cold winter night, summer seems like a distant memory. I know though that it will roll around again soon enough and I will be desperately trying to find some relief from the heat. But while I am not sporting my flip flops just yet I am thinking about sunscreen. Why am I thinking about sunscreen? Because we are going skiing this weekend. Do you need sunscreen when skiing? YES! When you are on the slopes the sun is not only shining on you directly but it is also reflecting off the snow. This can cause sun burn very quickly if you are not applying sunscreen to any exposed skin. Many skiiers and snowboards never even think about the dangers of the sun when they are on the mountain but I have young kids and believe strongly in protecting their skin.

Do you brush once a day? Twice a day? More? Do you brush for 1 minute? 2 minutes? 3 minutes? Do you use mouth rinse every time you brush? Do you floss everyday? As you are reading these questions how does your mouth feel? Are you going to go brush your teeth right now? Go ahead…I will wait until you get back. But come back as soon as you are done brushing because this is important stuff.
No matter how many times a day your brush brushing still misses about 75% of your mouth. I was surprised to hear this. It also causes me some concern because (head hung down in shame as I admit this) while I always brush twice a day, I don’t floss regularly and I don’t use mouthwash regularly. I know some of you are thinking…gross! And you are right. But maybe some of you are just like me and are doing the bare minimum when it comes to taking care of your oral hygiene. I have always used the excuse that I am just to busy to take the time to floss and have never really thought much about mouthwash. When I do use mouth wash I use it to freshen my breath not to clean my mouth and teeth. I do always get my teethed cleaned at the dentist office every 6 months, with a fluoride treatment every other visit. New habits are hard to create but I am determined to take better care of my teeth, gums, and mouth. Seriously, I floss my kids teeth, I think it is time I start flossing my own. I am going to take it one step further and start rinsing twice a day with Listerine mouthwash. Clearly brushing is not enough. You NEED mouthwash to get the places brushing has missed.
I am sure if you have been following this site you know I am married. I know collective sigh from all the single guys. Kidding! I have been with my husband for over 18 years now. I can’t imagine my life without him. I do however think relationships take work. They take a lot of work even if you are with the perfect person it still takes work. It is one of the secrets to a happy marriage. I am often asked how do you make it work? How do you have a successful relationship? I think beyond communicating your needs and wants and working hard to acknowledge your partners and try to meet or exceed their needs you need a plan. You also need the power of touch. I believe the key to a successful relationship is touch. It is that simple. There isn’t anyone who can melt my husband like I can. That is why I agreed to review this course and put it into action. I told my husband what I wanted to do and he couldn’t stop smiling.
What is melting your significant other? This isn’t an episode of Frozen for adults. It is however the single most important thing you can do for your partner is touch them. Mind out of the gutter I am talking about a massage. I have a husband who hates having anyone else touch him. He has a bad back and it helps that I know how to give a proper massage. The cost of the course is so minimal considering the time it saves and the fact that I can help my husband feel better. I realized when I brought this idea to his attention how much it was truly needed.
Over the next couple of days we are going to help you build your relationship because we all get busy. The one goal I had for this year was to let the people in my life know they are important. I truly believe the power of touch does that. I believe I have the power to continue to connect with my husband and it is all in the power of my hands.
I would like to invite you to take part in the Melt Class and I even scored you a 20% off discount This is what the Melt class is:
1) An online class led by Denis Merkas, a Registered Massage Therapist Massage for Couples
2) These videos are PG-rated, high quality and full of fantastic information.
3) These videos are truly about useful massage techniques. They never stray into sexual territory at all. Everyone is clothed at all times – that is Denis and his wife Emma in the actual videos. It’s not at all awkward to watch, unlike some of the other videos that are around on the internet.
4) The videos improve your technique by telling you what you’re doing wrong The videos will break down everything you’re doing wrong in your massage, from how you’re positioning yourself to how much you’re using your thumbs (hint: no thumbs are allowed!) – not only will you learn what you’re doing wrong, Denis shows you how to do it right. Your massage will change immediately for the better.
5) Melt is easy to watch and makes a great date night. The videos are broken down into short tutorials that last only a few minutes each, so you’re not stuck there for hours watching the courses.
6) You can learn at your own pace because you will have lifetime access to the videos.
7) Melt is the best stay at home date night. It’s a great way to spend time together and you don’t even need to get a babysitter, it’s easy to stream to any internet-enabled device in your living room.
8) Melt has been broken down into three short series that make for three great date nights – there’s the Basic Series, the Highlights Series and the Deep Tissue Series. Each builds upon each other and finishes with a follow-along massage routine so you can string all the techniques together and give your partner their first proper massage!
The Basic Series – This series starts with correcting some of the most common massage mistakes and showing you the foundations of your massage with long, sweeping strokes. You watch the short videos with a technique or tip in each, and it ends with a 5 minute follow-along massage routine.
The Highlights Series – This is where things start to get really good! You learn to look for the sore spots on each other’s bodies and how to work them. The neck, shoulders, lower back, arms, head… you’ll find places you didn’t even know that were sore! After you learn the 9 techniques from this series, there’s a 15-minute massage routine to follow along to. Hands still don’t hurt!
The Deep Tissue Series – So many people, myself included, love Deep Tissue stuff but it shouldn’t by over-emphasized. Denis leaves these tips to the very end for good reason, but they are such good techniques. It ends with an epic 30-minute massage follow along massage routine.
This special promo is for our Real Advice Gal community, with 20% off the retail price for LIFETIME video access to these incredible massage techniques. Visit MELT: Massage for Couples. Because, as Denis and Emma, the creators of MELT say, every relationship deserves a little massage.
Finding a way to get my healthy eating and activity levels back to balance has always been hard for me. We all get off track whether it is the holidays or a family crisis, there are times in life when we just don’t take care of ourselves as well as we should. For me from past experiences I know what does and doesn’t work. Having a goal to get healthy is too vague and doesn’t give me anything concrete to work towards. Instead I know that I need a hard deadline and a very clear achievable goal. I also need a plan. Now it is time to lay out my game plan for achieving this goal. I need to focus on eating right, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep.
