Karla’s Korner: Celebrating The Journey

Celebrating The Journey….

Twenty five years ago today I went to work and then to my boyfriend David’s house to fix dinner and spend the evening with him; something we had done several times a week for five months. We spent a lot of evenings cooking dinner together, hanging out in his basement shooting pool or sitting outside on the back patio watching the wildlife and enjoying each other’s company. Our lives were relatively simple and we liked it that way. As I stood at the stove stirring a pot of green beans David approached me and told me he had something to show me. As I turned around he was standing there holding a little black box in his hands with tears streaming down his cheeks. He said something about loving me and knowing I was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with and then he asked me if I would be his wife. It was my turn to cry as I blurted out a big “yes!” and he slipped a diamond ring on my left hand. We set a date and started to plan the rest of our lives…..Continue reading

Disney On Ice: 100 Years of Magic

Disney On Ice is Fun For The Whole Family

disney on ice 2

Our family goes to the Disney on Ice shows at least once a year. I remember going myself as a child and have always enjoyed taking my own kids. The shows are a great way to experience the magic of Disney without traveling. Each show features the characters you love and the music from the motion pictures. My husband doesn’t even complain about going with us and that is why we are so excited for the newest show to come to the Metro Detroit Area. From October 16-20,2013- The Palace of Auburn Hills will be showcasing 100 Years of Magic. Continue reading

Karla’s Korner: Lessons from a Squirrel

Lessons from a Squirrel…

Sitting down to write this week there is heaviness in the air with a fine misty rain falling from the sky. The first signs of fall have arrived along with a cool crispness in the morning air. I absolutely love this time of year. I find myself spending a few extra minutes outside on the playground with my preschoolers, taking the long way back through the memory garden to our classroom pointing out the new colors of fall on the trees. Another sign that fall is upon us is the multitude of squirrels darting in and out of the trees collecting food for the long winter. My classroom sits on the corner of the building which gives me the privilege of having two sets of double windows in my room. My students and I have been able to watch one particular little squirrel diligently work toward collecting food for the upcoming winter. With my students squealing with joy as they watch the squirrel zip past on the hunt for the perfect nut the squeals continue as he returns moments later to the other side of the building to store his newfound treat. This back and forth routine goes on all day long. While talking with my students about this busy little critter I wondered aloud if he ever rested; one little girl said she thought he needed to take a break.Continue reading

Karla’s Korner: Blending Families, Making Memories and Finding Purpose

Blending Families, Making Memories and Finding Purpose

This week my husband and I traveled to a small lakeside community in Ohio to celebrate his brother’s wedding. We had heard so much about the Huron, Ohio community and the small town charm but wasn’t sure what to expect. Initially our plan was to stay in a local hotel and hopefully spend time with extended family at some point during the weekend. After receiving an email inviting us to share a lake house together we cancelled our reservations and prepared for a busy weekend concluding with welcoming a new sister in law to the family clan.

After nearly eight hours in the car we arrived at our destination and quickly discovered that graciousness and hospitality is not just a characteristic of the south. Our first blessing came when we realized the owners of the lake house offered it to our family free of charge. This beautiful fully furnished home was ours for the weekend and the only request from the owner was to pay it forward by making a monetary donation to the local food bank or the cancer research fund. Who doses this? Who decides to purchase a home to share it with complete strangers? Kind, caring, gracious people that’s who!Continue reading
