Ask A Marathon Mommy: What to Wear?

Sharon is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a background in mental health, substance abuse, and child welfare.

“I tried my hand at being a work at home mom, but in 2009 I decided that being a stay at home mom is what works best for me and my family, at least for now. As my kids like to say, I’m “The Boss” of the family, which includes my husband of 9 years, two daughters (ages 4 and 6), and a giant goldfish named Princess Leia. My girls are beautiful and curious and wild and exhausting, and life is never, ever dull! I love reading, traveling, trying new restaurants, and shopping for bargains. I’m also training to run my first marathon in February 2013.”

My first half marathon is NEXT WEEK!!! I’m ridiculously excited! And, like most women preparing for a big event, I’ve got a very important topic on my mind: What Should I Wear?

I decided to ask for some advice. I started with my favorite fashion consultant – my six year old daughter. She recommended that I wear: “something new…something clean…and something awesome.” Got it. Next I asked my four year old. She suggested that I wear pink and that I try to look like “the runner that wins.” Ummm…okay, I’ll see what I can do about that.

With that helpful advice tucked under my FuelBelt, I went to my running group for input from some ladies who’ve been there. And there was lots of advice to go around. Here’s some of what I learned, starting from the ground up:

1. Running Shoes – Selecting the right shoes is a very personal process and sometimes requires a bit of trial and error. I went to a running store a few weeks ago and was professionally fitted for shoes. This process took about an hour and involved a various forms of measurement, a treadmill, and a video camera. I decided on a pair of Asics, which is actually what I was running in previously. I like that they are roomy in the toes. However, there are obviously tons of great brands. Just make sure you invest in a great pair. This is not the time to bargain shop. Trust me. Those words are not easy for me to type.Continue reading

DIY Craft Journals

Hi I’m Gwendolyn and I have been a stay at home mom since 2009. I have been with my husband, James, for 10 years and we are proud parents of Jayme (8) and Nicholas (13). We are also parents to 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 hamsters, and a snake. My father-in-law lives with us so it is always non-stop at our house. I had the honor of becoming a step-parent when I got married and have a great relationship with my step-son. I always used coupons and shopped for bargains but was forced to step up my game when my husband was disabled in 2005. I get an incredible rush from saving money and finding great deals. My life is a constant journey and I look forward to sharing it with you all.

Buying fancy journals can get expensive and my sister had made these a few years ago for my dad because he writes a lot. I started doing them as a way for my daughter to have cute journals without paying a fortune at the store. She is always doodling and could go thru one in a month. They are simple to make and not very costly.

  • 2 pieces of scrapbook paper (you could also use construction paper you have decorated with markers or stamps)

Fashion Friday: Nail art

Amee

I am a fashion girl. I have had my nails done for a year now. I know I am addicted. I am also addicted to having a reason to get out of the house and get a little bit of me time. It is worth the $15 for the fill. I have been looking at the nail art forever. I just can’t justify the expense of the design. I had a bit of inspiration from my daughter. she puts stickers on everything. I decided sticker on my nails would be perfect. The question I had was will they last? Do they look good? Can I do them myself?

The answer is they are so easy to apply. Yes, I did them myself. I found that if you put on clear polish on the top then they stay. The picture above is my nails after a week . I have a crazy life with three kids and I type all the time. The kiss stickers lasted! I love them. You can grab them off amazon or at walmart! They look so good my husband asked how much they cost in that I am going to get on your case kinda of voice. I told him the whole pack was under $5.00 and I have enough for three or four more applications. He just smiled. I guess the deal blogger wins this round! The nail polish is OPI Yodel Me On My Cell. Try it just know you can remove them with nail polish remover.
