What’s for Dinner Wednesday: Once a Month Cooking

Once a Month Cooking

once a month cooking

Hey good looking what ya got cooking…. nothing! I am just heating it up.

There are three things that made me want to try to cook my meals ahead of time using the Once A Month cooking Method.

  1. Three Kids that are hungry at 5:00. One requires me to eat, the other two require me to cook for them.
  2. Three Jobs (Stay at Home Mom, Co-Owner of Madame Deals, Help Desk Supervisor)
  3. Less time in the kitchen and more time with my family

I am starting small. I began with the FREE menu provided HERE. I just cooked for one week. I started at 8:00 pm and finished at around 11:00 pm. I was assisted by my newborn son. I found the recipes to be so easy that I also boiled eggs for egg salad and made homemade spagetthi sauce, and pasta bakes while making the seven meals in the recipe guide. I ended up cooking 12 meals total. I found the recipes easy to follow and I look forward to eating them next week. I will let you know how it goes each Wednesday as I work my way out of the kitchen and back into my life.

Here is what I made:

• Cream Chicken Pasta

• Brie Strata

•Three Bean Chili

• Pesto Grilled Chicken Breasts

• Spicy Taco Salad

• Citrus Salmon

• Fettuccine & Herbed Shrimp

  • yup it is a mess

Step 1: I cleaned out my freezer

Step 2: I looked to see what I already had. I didn’t have much meat because we just had company so we ate a lot out of the freezer.

Step 3: Print out your shopping list

Step 4: Head to the Grocery Store

    food from Krogers

I went to Kroger and bought the ingredients. I did not use coupons. I know gasp! I did this on purpose to see what the true cost would be for every family. It cost $58.90 for 7 meals for 4 or more people. This works out to almost $8 a meal or $2 or less a person. (I can spend much less by buying the meat ahead of time when it is  on sale. The ingredients are also on hand staples like beans so I can buy those very cheaply with coupons.)

Step 5: Do your prep work

    Step 6: Assembly the recipes

Step 7: Print out the cooking instructions and paper clip them on the bag

    Step 8: Freeze

    Step 9: Heat up!!

Be sure to freeze your bags as flat as possible. This will make them easier to stack side by side or on top of one another. I usually do this by placing them on a cookie sheet and then making sure the sheet is level. Space saving for your freezer!
