Upcycle Your Used Candles

Up-cycle Your Used Candles

I get very disappointed when the wicks on my candles burn out and I have candle wax left. I hate throwing it away even though I have a closet full of candles in every shape and size. Some may just see leftover useless wax but I see $$$. This weekend I accidentally ruined my favorite jar candle because I had left it on the oven while I baked for 6 hours.I almost threw it away out of frustration when I had an idea.

I pulled out some Christmas cookie cutters, a cutting board, a piece of aluminum foil, plastic spoon, and the ruined candle and turned it into Christmas shaped wax melts.

Follow these simple steps and you can Up-cycle your used candles into melts also.

  1. Scoop out the leftover wick pieces and any metal pieces hooked to the wicks. If you have several smaller used candles instead of a jar candle, just place the smaller candles in a glass bowl.
  2. Cover a cutting board or a portion of your table/counter with aluminum foil.
  3. Place your cookie cutters on the aluminum foil.
  4. Put your (NON-METAL) candle holder or glass bowl and microwave in 15 second segments until it is melted. **
  5. Pour the melted wax into to the cookie cutters and let sit until hardened.
  6. Simply Lift the cookie cutter from the aluminum foil and push out the wax shapes.
  7. You now have Wax Melts to use or give away as a gift.

** You can also fill a pot with about an inch of water and place your glass candle holder in the water. Bring to a slow boil and the wax will slowly melt. This is great if you cannot remove the wicks prior to melting. **

If the wax does not push out of the cookie cutter, place in the freezer for a few minutes and then try again.

Hi I’m Gwendolyn and I have been a stay at home mom since 2009. I have been with my husband, James, for 10 years and we are proud parents of Jayme (8) and Nicholas (13). We are also parents to 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 hamsters, and a snake. My father-in-law lives with us so it is always non-stop at our house. I had the honor of becoming a step-parent when I got married and have a great relationship with my step-son. I always used coupons and shopped for bargains but was forced to step up my game when my husband was disabled in 2005. I get an incredible rush from saving money and finding great deals. My life is a constant journey and I look forward to sharing it with you all.
