Boston Strong

Boston Strong Last Monday, like the rest of the country, I sat staring at my computer in horror, transfixed by the events unfolding before me in Boston. Explosions at the Boston Marathon. Who would do such a thing? Why the Boston Marathon? Why target the running community? My heart broke for the runners, the spectators, the friends and family members who'd come to celebrate this iconic day and watch their loved ones triumph across the finish line. One of my first thoughts was that just two … [Read more...]

Marathon Mommy: One Month Later

mommy

What happened after the marathon? It’s been about a month since I ran my marathon, and I just wanted to check in! After the marathon, I had quite a lot of pain in my right knee and left foot. Both subsided on their own, albeit with a little help from icing and anti-inflammatories. I took a two week break from all exercise – which wasn’t hard to accomplish, since for the first week or so, I could barely even walk up and down the stairs in my house. I’ve started running again, but my … [Read more...]

Ask A Marathon Mommy: Victory

marathon

Marathon Victory! I did it! I met my goal. Last Sunday, I completed the 26.2 with Donna, also known as the National Breast Cancer Marathon. I’m a marathoner! Now, here’s probably where you’re expecting me to describe how gratifying and exhilarating the finish was. But there’s a lot more to the story. My marathon experience was, … [Read more...]

Ask A Marathon Mommy: You Are What You Eat

marathon

Hi, friends! I'm sorry for my absence from this column. Truth be told, I've been lacking a bit of motivation. My energy level has been poor, and for the past few weeks, I've been crashing by mid-afternoon. During my run last week, I mentioned this to one of my running pals, Myra, who happens to be a nurse. She asked some questions about my diet, and I sheepishly admitted to my very poor eating habits, including: coffee with loads of cream and sugar for breakfast; routinely skipping meals; and a … [Read more...]

Ask A Marathon Mommy: Brrrr…

marathon

Brrrr... To Floridians like myself, anything below 65 degrees is considered chilly weather. So you can imagine my dismay when I woke up yesterday morning for my run, checked the weather, and saw that it was 31 degrees outside! I've done some running in chilly temperatures, but this was my first run in truly cold weather. I did the best I could to bundle up, but I definitely need to do a bit of preparation for my next cold run - especially if the weather is going to be similar for next … [Read more...]
