No Sugar Recipe for Kids: Grandma’s Homemade Applesauce

My Grandma’s Homemade Applesauce

When I was a little girl, my Grandma taught me one of her mottos: “Waste not, want not.” She was reducing, reusing, and recycling before it was cool – a real trendsetter! One of the ways that my Grandma puts this motto into practice is by turning nearly overripe fruit into applesauce. Instead of throwing the fruit away, she turns it into a delicious, healthy treat – with no added sugar!

No Sugar Recipe for Kids: Homemade Applesauce

Ingredients

  • 4 apples
  • strawberries peaches, or other leftover fruit
  • We keep use an extra bowl to collect apple peels cores, and anything else that can be used as compost.

Instructions

  • Wash and peel the apples. You can use a regular peeler, an apple peeler, or a paring knife.
  • Core the apples, using a knife or an apple corer.
  • Cut the apples in cubes.
  • Place them in a medium saucepan.
  • Wash and prepare any other fruit that you will be using. Cut harder fruits (e.g., peaches or pears) into chunks. Softer fruits like strawberries can be used whole.
  • Place the fruit into the saucepan with the apples.
  • Bring to a simmer on medium heat.
  • Lower the heat and continue to simmer until fruit softens.
  • Mash the fruit with a wooden spoon or a potato masher.
  • Continue to simmer on low heat and mash fruit until it reaches your desired consistency.

I used Red Delicious apples, for this applesauce but you can use whatever type you have handy. You can add sugar or cinnamon as desired, but my kinds and I found it to be sweet enough just on its own. This recipe made about 2 servings.

Thank you to my beautiful, 91-years-young Grandma for this wonderful, kid-friendly applesauce recipe.
