Making Dollars out of Change: Cloth Napkins

making dollars changes

Welcome to the first addition of Making Dollars out of Change! The goal of this weekly theme is to share ideas on how to make small changes that will net more money in your pocket. Saving money is not all about coupons. Making a change in your daily habits can be financially beneficial. Small changes lead to change in your pockets that will eventually add up to dollars!

One of my goals for the year was to start using cloth napkins and towels instead of paper. Not only will cloth products save us money, it is also green! Paper products can be pricey- even with coupons. I found that we were going through a ton of paper towels. With two small boys, there is always a mess to clean up. Paper towels were our go to clean-up tool. One day it hit me that this was very wasteful. We have a ton of fabric towels, so why not use them?

Here are the steps I have taken to gradually make the switch:

  • Start by gradually using more cloth towels over paper towels. I have one roll of paper towels left. When they are gone, I will not buy anymore (maybe if they are free!).
  • I purchased fabric napkins on clearance after Christmas. We started with replacing our dinner time paper napkins with cloth napkins.
  • Place the cloth napkins in a basket for easy reach. I placed mine in a tissue box basket.
  • If you have paper napkins or towels out, you will use them. Put the paper out of site to get yourself into the new routine. I still have paper napkins for when we have guests. This is simply because I do not have enough fabric napkins at this point.

Now it’s your turn! If you are a blogger, write a post about your idea for making dollars out of change. Please place a link back to Madame Deals in your post. Then come back here and add your post URL to the linky. Please post directly to your post and not your homepage.

We made this switch a little over a year ago, and it has made a huge difference. You’re right about paper towels being such a waste.

One thing I did to beef up my supply is to go to the thrift store. You can get them for dirt cheap there. Granted, they won’t match, but my kiddos & hubby don’t care about that:)

Another idea I got from someone else is to grab a pack of cheap washcloths from Walmart. They are usually less than $5.00 for a 12 pack and are GREAT for washing up little sticky hands & faces after meals!!

I love this meme & as soon as I come up with something I’ll link up:)

I am hoping to make this same change soon. I am currently looking for cloth napkins on clearance so that I can stock up. As the commenter above suggested, I think I’ll try the thrift store as well.

Great idea! I’m sorry I’m late to the party but this is the first time I’ve been at my computer all day!

I’m going to jump right in and add my detergent link – I LOVE how simple this is, and how much money I can save!
