Library: A Great Resource for the Whole Family

sensible saver sunday

We talk a lot about our families and saving money. We also talk about educating ourselves and our children. The best place to do both of those things is the library. The library is the best place to save money. How? Well they have books, movies, video games, free internet, and community activities. How do I save money? Well, I use the library.

I read books very quickly and I was spending hundreds of dollars on books. I now go online and reserve my books and I the library calls me when they are in. I save $30.00 a book. I check out books on everything. I have learned amazing things just by reading. We read to our children every night. I spend about 1 1/2 hours everyday reading with or to my children. In my opinion, this is the number one predictor of success in school. If you invest your time and read with your children, they will be more successful across the board in their academics. My family does author studies, subject investigations, and reading just for fun. This quality time we spend is priceless and FREE.

We love the movie section of our library. This is also available online for reservation. I grab DVDs for our trips. This way I do not have to buy movies that we may or may not watch more than once. We get DVDs that teach social skills, beginning reading and math skills, and cartoons. I check out videos on cooking, musicals, historical events, and comedies and romances. I just got a call to pick up “Confessions of a Shopaholic”.

We have a Wii and we can rent games for $2.00 at our library. I even tried the game that used the dance mat. That could have provided hours of amusement for anyone who was watching me! I found out that is not the game for me. This is a super way to try games. My son loves spending his allowance on this treat. This is also a great way for Santa to determine what to buy.

The library has free internet for public use. This is a great way to get connected without paying. The library also offers a quiet place to bring your own laptop and use their wireless network without having to buy yummy, but expensive, coffee.

Our library offers story time, beading, and arts and crafts classes. Their classes are usually free or inexpensive and informative. Check your local library for classes.

So how can you use the library to do a stay vacation?

  • Pick a place: another state or country.
  • Grab a cookbook and make a dish from that place. Do this together as a family.
  • Then find books written about that place. You can even take it a step further by finding authors from that place.
  • As an extension I would  find crafts to do that are native to that region.
  • You may even be able to find a movie about the place or one that was filmed in the area.

Be creative and use your resources is a great way to learn and save money at the same time.

Donate your videos, DVDs, and Books to the library. They are tax deductible and it allows the library to add to their inventory which benefits everyone!

Madame Deals has a coupon swap box at our library. So if you live in Fluvanna county it is located under the books on tape. Swap away!
