Let Your Light Shine…

Author and motivational speaker Katrina Mayer wrote “Let your light shine so brightly that others can see their way out of the dark”. Recently my husband and I went outside to see if we could catch a glimpse of the International Space Station flying overhead. Thinking it was a long shot we stood in the driveway and looked for what was described to be a bright shining light travelling at certain coordinates across the sky. Amongst the bright twinkling stars and airplane lights blinking across the night sky we were skeptical to say the least. Finally we saw it and followed it across the sky and then out of sight. It was amazing to think that all of those miles up “there” the light shined bright enough for us to see it and that there were people living there, in the distance, in the light. I wondered what their view was like, if there were certain lights that stood out from down here that they could recognize; a beacon of sort. The light from the space station broke into the darkness giving a tiny glimpse of the great beyond.

A few days later I was reminded of the importance of shining our own light, being a beacon, so that others will see goodness and positivity in our world while reading my morning meditative devotional reading. Sitting in the darkness of the early morning reading and re-reading the passage I recalled certain people I’ve met on my life path who have been a beacon for me, who have been the example of light shining positivity for those in the world around them. There were a few teachers in my early years whose light affected me; my high school English teacher who made learning fun and my tennis coach made the game fun and encouraged us to be a team, work together, and be our best both on and off the tennis court; both, examples of being a positive force, a bright light, a shining example for others to follow. There have been others who have lit my life path with their lights with humor, kindness, sincerity, thoughtfulness and unconditional love.

Luminosity is defined as the intrinsic brightness of a celestial object or the brightness of an object. Being luminous I believe is a recognition or celebration of the light you have within your being, within your soul, the very essence of who you are. Your light makes you uniquely you. In our society today we are often blinded by the concept or notion that bigger, brighter and louder are better and often that it what gains the most attention at first but it’s the quiet steady beacon I think that casts the better glow. Sometimes the brightest bulb burns the least amount of time because it uses more energy to burn thus causing the bulb to burn out, but the bulb that burns steady casting its glow evenly and consistently lasts longer. But what happens when we begin to fear what others think of us? Quite often we tend to hide our light, to try to conform to what we believe others think we should be; we dim our light to satisfy someone else.

Have you ever met someone who simply radiates goodness and makes you feel special for no reason other than being in their presence? If you have then you are blessed. My world has been graced by a handful of beacons and it is their example that I try to follow keeping in mind that my light may shine differently because each light source, or soul, is different. Some are funny, light hearted and full of energy while others are softer, quieter filled with peace and gentleness; but each light shines so that others may see their example and shine their own.

The key is to eliminate the negativity in your life; from your own attitude to the company you keep. Surrounding yourself with positivity will enhance your light shining ability. Every morning I spend at least thirty minutes in the darkness of my room reading from various devotional resources, listening to music with a candle flickering on the table beside me. The glow of the candle breaks through the darkness creating warmth and providing a peaceful setting for me to read and pray; it sets the tone for my day and reminds me of a quote by motivational speaker Paulo Coelho “No one lights a lamp in order to hide it behind the door; the purpose of light is to create more light, to open people’s eyes, to reveal the marvels around.”

This week I encourage you to be that light; reach down deep into your soul and shine your unique light for others to see. Create for yourself and those you share your world a safe, calm place to settle their hearts and minds and begin to shine their own light. Live fully. Love completely. Laugh deeply and shine your best light along your life path.

Peace,
Karla
