Creating and maintaining a vegetable garden really cannot compete with the convenience of my local grocery store, so I am hard pressed to consider it a viable option. I feel like I am probably not the only one who wants to dive in, but is unsure how to get started and what to plant where and when.

I cannot be the only one who is clueless and needs a breakdown on how to have a green thumb for dummies like me to be able to get started. Can I?

Tips for starting a vegetable garden

First, do you have a big backyard? Perhaps a raised bed garden would be a great addition to your space? You need to realistically look into your space and see how much of it you can dedicate to a garden. If you live in an apartment, you might want to consider a table garden or container garden for an outdoor patio area. There are so many fantastic options for containers for every type of space.

Second, how much time do you have? Can you tend it daily or will you try to be a weekend warrior with your green thumb? There are plants for all levels of time commitment. Make sure you are not diving in too deep and getting discouraged.

Tips for starting a vegetable garden

Lastly, what time of year is it and what is in season for your type of environment? Just like there are plants for all spaces, not all plants grow in every area. If you live in a city or suburb, rainy, sunny, dry, or humid, there are plants for you. There are a lot of place you can start, but no matter where you start, make sure you you are diving in and getting your hands dirty and hopefully you will find that you have plenty of bounty to show on your dinner table throughout the year.
