So, you want to make homemade body wash? Always thought it was too hard? Well think again

You will need:

  • 1 Large stock pot
  • 2 large measuring cups (one must be glass or microwave safe at least)
  • 3 Bars of soap ( I used Ivory because it is what I got free)
  • Microwave (or cheese grater you can use either)
  • Mixer (electric is better but if you want you can hand mix just takes longer)
  • Water (6 cups min might have to add more depending on your soap)
  • Lots of bottles this will make about a gallon depending on your soap
  • Scent oil (optional)

Steps:

  • Bring six cups of water to a low boil on the stove
  • Rough chop a bar of soap so it fits easily in your measuring cup (the glass one this will go in
  • the microwave. If no microwave grate like you would cheese and put in the boiling water melt
  • throurally)
  • Melt soap in the microwave for 30 seconds. (this varies by microwave)
  • Add melted soap to the simmering water stir well (repeat until all soap is in the water)
  • Mix thourally (this is where that mixer comes in handy)
  • Let cool fully mix in sent oil then bottle.
  • Enjoy

Tips and tricks:

If your soap is really thick after cooling add boiling water and mix fully again this will vary by type of
soap you use.

If you use Oil of Olay soap start with 4 cups of water or your soap will be really thin due to the
amount of moisturizers in the soap.

    Thanks for the recipe!!

Interesting…but I don’t think I’d have the time for this. I prefer certain perfumed body washes that are already made and in pretty bottles.

  7. says

This is a great idea. I have sensitive skin and am very careful with the soap that I use. They don’t make any of it in a body wash so now I can make my own.

  8. Patricia Reiff says

Interesting… I never thought of it before… I believe that one of these days I might actually take the time to try it…

Thanks so much for the great recipe!!! My skin is VERY sensitive to store body washes because of all the perfumes. I can’t wait to try it!

  11. Sharon Siqueiros says

Okay, I made some with scraps and cuttings from a friends’ and mine…..worked great, smells…..well…..since we both make scented soaps and such, lets just say I smelled like the lady who let every perfume girl from the store spray me…..not one of my better special blends hahahahaha! Maybe unscented soap and then the fragrance you want added to it

  12. Teresa Stricker-Pester says

What a Fantastic Idea!!!!! I am going to use this right away! (I have been stockpiling free bars of different soaps for a long time and I am going to start with the Irish Spring I have. (hubby has an almost empty bottle and I am wondering if I I don’t say it is homemade, will he notice anything different.). Thanks!

I have recently become very interested in making my own air fresheners, laundry detergents, fabric softener and household cleansers. The more I learn what type of ingredients go into commercial products, the less I want to use them! I have been wanting to learn to make my own soaps and body washes, too. Thanks to you for the tips and recipe…now I can make my own! I cannot wait to get started! It looks much easier than I originally thought!

  17. Susan Johnson says

I didn’t realize that it’s so simple to make body wash from soaps, and I would imagine it really stretches those 3 bars of soap to last a very long time, which saves a lot of money when you are using the more pricey moisturizing soaps that seem to wash down the drain all too fast!

  18. Tanis Sutter says

I’ve made laundry soap, homemade cleaners, and even homemade febreeze. Now I need to try this! Thank you!

I’m not much of a DIY person, but this sounds like it would be fun to try! I would like to use up little scraps of soap, or my 30 teeny tiny bars that I keep pilfering from hotels that I never end up using. Also, I think it would be great to customize a body wash with essential oils that I like, rather than the overly perfumy ones I usually end up with.

  21. Pamela Halligan says

I make my own body scrub and face mask. Thanks for showing me how to make my own body wash. It is easier than I thought.
