I run my dishwasher almost daily and buying dishwasher detergent just eats away at budget even with coupons. So when I came across the recipe for Homemade Dishwasher Detergent, I just had to try it. I have been using it for about 8 months and have converted my mother to use it also.

It is simple to mix, store, and use.

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

  • 2 cups Borax
  • 2 cups Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
  • 1 cup Kosher Salt
  • 8 packages of Lemon Kool-Aid (the generic brand works just fine)

Mix all the ingredient together and store in a container of your choice. I use a plastic Gladware container.

Use 1 TBSP per load. (To make measuring easy – I use a medicine cup that came with my kids cough medicine.)

Tip: Write the recipe on the container along with the amount to use per load. This will ensure you always know what to use.

Tip:For a rinse aid use plain vinegar in the rinse aid compartment of your dishwasher.

Hi I’m Gwendolyn and I have been a stay at home mom since 2009. I have been with my husband, James, for 10 years and we are proud parents of Jayme (8) and Nicholas (13). We are also parents to 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 hamsters, and a snake. My father-in-law lives with us so it is always non-stop at our house. I had the honor of becoming a step-parent when I got married and have a great relationship with my step-son. I always used coupons and shopped for bargains but was forced to step up my game when my husband was disabled in 2005. I get an incredible rush from saving money and finding great deals. My life is a constant journey and I look forward to sharing it with you all.

Cant wait to try this!! Got a question tho…is the koolaid just for the scent? Or does it do something? I really hate lemon scent. Sounds WIERD but I kinda like the bleachy smell that comes from my dishwasher when it’s running, makes me feel like they are really clean. Bleach is bad, I know, I just like the “clean” smell.
