This week for Making Dollars Out of Change I want to focus on celebrating holidays on a budget. Planning and being creative goes a long way. Shopping year round has really cut my gift budget. This summer I picked up Valentine’s Day crafts at a yard sale for .50¢. Although I did not need the craft items at that moment, I knew they would come in handy six months down the line.
After a holiday has passed, check the clearance section for crafts or decorations for next year. Re-purpose items meant for one holiday and use it for another. After Christmas I picked up a Kellogg’s Rice Krispie Treat kit on clearance. The kit contained all the ingredients, a foil pan mold and decorations. I would have never bought it for the regular retail price. However, it was reasonable for 50-75% off. Instead of making Christmas houses, we made Valentine’s Day Treats!
If you are looking for a fun Valentine’s Day idea that is healthy, make watermelon hearts. Cut a watermelon in ¼” to ½” slices. Using a heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out the watermelon. Use a bamboo skewer and oranges to make an arrow. Fruit is a great option to cut down on the candy focus that Valentine’s Day brings. I had full intentions of making these but the weather has prevented me from getting to the store!
Holidays do not mean that you have to spend a lot of money. Think about holidays year round and collect items in advance. Re-purposing items also saves money and shows your creative side!
