Frugal ways to save money when buying new home appliances

Frugal Ways to Save Money on Home Appliances

Spring is a time of new beginnings.  For many, it’s also the time when a large income tax refund comes in.  Some may use those extra funds to pay off debt, to plan for a much needed and deserved vacation, or to put toward savings.  This year we plan to use those funds to replace our dishwasher, refrigerator and stove.  After over ten years, these appliances have outlived their usefulness.  The dishwasher leaks and our last attempt to repair it proved worthless.  The refrigerator is not defrosting and is loud. As for the stove, it’s an older electric burner version which I have dreamed of replacing with a ceramic flat top since we moved in a number of years ago.  It looks like it’s time to check out the home appliances sales.

The one hurdle we have to overcome is the cost involved in replacing these appliances.  If you’ve been appliance shopping recently, you know they aren’t cheap.  There are also so many different models, styles, colors, and finishes to choose from.  All the appliances in our kitchen are white so making a decision about color is already done.  I have no intention of replacing white appliances with stainless steel and then waiting to save up enough to replace the rest of them.  So be it … white appliances are what we will be buying.

Now that the color decision is made, it’s time to explore our options.  Personally, I prefer to check prices online and then go to the store to actually see the product.  My husband, on the other hand, wants nothing to do with looking online at anything and insists we have to travel to at least three stores to physically view each and every option.  It looks like I’ll be doing my online research when he’s not around so I can be armed and ready when we arrive at the store.

In order to get the best price on what we want, I’ll be checking for sales which can be combined with coupons. I’ve found that you don’t always have to have a coupon in your hand to get the savings offered.  These days most stores will honor coupon codes which in the past were reserved exclusively for online purchases.  One of my favorite sayings is “it never hurts to ask.”  Most of the time when I ask about using an online coupon code for an in-store purchase, the salesperson has been amenable to at least trying to enter the code in the store.  This has saved us tons of money over the years.
