I am very excited to tell you that I am a VTech Voices blogger. Over the next few weeks, I will be writing a post each week based on different themes that revolve around children reading. I will also be telling you about the new V.Reader from VTech currently available at Target. Plus, you will have some opportunities to win some prizes! The theme for this week: Favorite Reading Spots.
Reading is a great way to keep your kids involved and learning in the summer months. Last month we told you about some of the summer reading programs available that reward kids for reading. My boys have been participating in the reading program at our local library and they have each earned two new books! We have also taken the V.Tech Summer Reading Pledge.
The recent “Summer Smarts” survey revealed that 78% of kids do not have a summer reading list. One out of every three moms with children from ages 3 to 7, said that their busy schedule made it difficult to verify that their children read enough. Sometimes it can be hard to engage kids in reading when we are constantly on the go!
One suggestion to encourage reading is to try different locations. We traditionally read books at bedtime. This week I have challenged my boys to read at other times in the day. Although bedtime reading is great, I am not sure that they learn as much when their brains are half asleep! Also, many times we are running late for bedtime with all of our summer activities and books get pushed aside.
Mason loves the outdoors. His favorite reading spot is currently in his swing set fort. Although, it seems that Mason will read just about anywhere as I often see him laying right on our hardwood floor! Brennan just turned two and he hardly sits still for a minute! The only time I can get him to read is in the car or at bedtime.
This week we received the new V.Reader which is an Animated eBook system for children. My boys have played with it non-stop! It has a touch screen which was easy for Mason to learn. The V. Reader is for kids who are learning to read, generally ages 3-7 years old. I love that the stories come alive and are interactive. Plus there are games and even an interactive dictionary! I can’t wait until there are downloadable stories which are coming very soon. I will be sharing more about the V.Reader over the next few weeks.
Your challenge this week is to find your child’s favorite reading spot.
What are your kids favorite reading spots? Do you find that reading in new locations makes reading more interesting? Be adventurous and try something new! We would love to see pictures of you and your kids reading in unusual places!
