Fashion Friday: Clearing the Clutter

I love Fashion but I hate paying tons of money to look great. I believe you need two things the knowledge of what looks good on you and the skill to find it for less. I encourage you to get rid of all the items in your closet that you do not wear. They cloud up your options to make really great outfits because you can’t see your clothes! If they are in good condition sell the at a consignment store or a place like Plato’s closet, or host a clothing swap. Clothing swaps are a blast!

I found that organizing your closet gives you a unique prospective on your life.  I just embarked on the challenge of getting rid of almost all of my maternity clothes. I am not back to my “normal” weight- it has only been two weeks. I am not in a hurry to get skinny again. I actually happen to like the extra weight. I intend to try to keep at least five pounds of it.

I have a special section in my closet that represents a museum to me. It contains the dress I wore on my first date with my husband, a shirt from my sorority, my University of Florida Sweatshirt, and an orange shirt that makes me look like I have a super bust line. I limit myself to these special items when I clean out my closet. I do not keep things I do not wear. Since I pay so little for each item that I do not feel the need to keep them. I also have several family members and friends that encourage me to get rid of items.

I make sure to get rid of the “never again” items when I clean my closet. I then collect the items I am getting rid of in a tote. When I try on things and do not like them I throw them in the tote. The tote is then taken to swaps.

How do I know what to keep and what to get rid of? Well, I hang my clothes by style and then color. Put all the long sleeves together, tanks, party tops, t-shirts, skirts… etc in their group. When I wear the item I hang the hanger backwards. When the season ends if the hanger is facing the correct way. I remove the item for the swap. I admit to having tons of clothes. I also have confirmed on several occasions that shopping is my hobby and since I give myself $20.00 a week I can buy what I want and still live within the budget.

Here are items that I will never get rid of: (I would suggest looking for them now to build the perfect wardrobe)

A great pair of dark jeans

Black flat front pants

A pair of Khaki pants

White button down shirt that is tailored

Ballet flats

Riding boots

3 Cashmere Sweaters black, cream, (your favorite color)

3 T-Shirts I love J Crew or Gap

Tailored raincoat

How do you make sure you are in control of your closet?
