Current Choice: My choice is select your own savings

I love to save money. I used to think it was impossible to lower my electronic rate. You know “they” determine the charge per kilowatt and you pay it no matter what. That’s actually not true any more. I used to think I had no choice in who provides my electricity. That is actually not true either. You could say it was a “lightbulb” moment for me when I found out about CurrentChoice. With CurrentChoice you can choose who provides your electricity AND you can lower your electric bill hundreds of dollars.
CurrentChoice is the buffet of electricity providers! In the past you could not choose your rate plan or service provider. I equate this to being stuck forever with one Phone Company that could charge me what they wanted per month. Now people in Pennsylvania, and other deregulated states, can choose the company they buy electricity from. Your electric utility will continue to maintain the wires and poles and deliver the electricity you buy to your home. The picture below shows the difference between a utility and an electricity supplier and the benefits of using CurrentChoice to buy your electricity.
There is not charge to switch– It’s free, it’s easy, and it’s SAFE. Yes SAFE– there is no interruption in your service, no new wires, no service call. And in the event of a power outage, your service will be restored as it always has been. You won’t even know it happened until you see savings on your electric bill. And, you keep the same priority status for having your service restored, in the event of a power outage.
Energy deregulation and Current Choice
If you are in the Pittsburgh PA area and Duquesne Light is your electric utility, you can start savings now. Even if you do not live in the Pittsburgh area, go to now and enter your zip code and email address. They will let you know when they are in your area.

When I got to the site I entered a zipe code in the Duquesne Light service area, CurrentChoice then showed me a list of electric plans available for that area AND how much I could save with each plan. I had the option of variable rate plans, where the rates change monthly based on the current market prices or fixed rate plans where the rates are fixed for 12, 18, 24 months. I also had the option of choosing a plan that was 100% green energy. I saw the average household in the area could save $20 a month that comes to $240 a year. I hate to say it but we are not average. I imagine my savings would be higher. I never thought cheaper electricity was possible but it is. How cool is that! I know I would like to save $240 a year it only took me a few minutes.

Best of all, CurrentChoice allows you to view the details of several plans side by side so you can make a real apples to apples comparison, choose the plan that is right for you and then sign up on the site. That is it your new supplier arranges for the switch to happen automatically. No one needs to come to your house.

How about you? Are you ready to spend less on your electricity? You can choose your terms of enrollment and it is the same electricity you have now for less. The only question is which plan is your CurrentChoice?

This would be a great option on all services that we must have. When there is a monopoly on utilities we suffer.

  2. Kathi Davis says

we need to have more options so the utility companies don’t have a monopoly on them and to help the public have choices and to save money instead of always lining their pockets

  3. Amanda Sakovitz says

This will soon be available in MA so I definitely will have to look into it. We could use savings any way we can get them

  5. Tammy S says

  11. Chevy Roper says

This is such a great service! It would definitely help out so many people who are struggling during these hard times, myself included. Just wish that it was available in GA!

  12. amanda g. says

i would love for this to come to my area..i really cant stand the fact that we dont have choices when it comes to electric companies period..but we have to have it so all i can do its deal with it!! great article!!

  13. Amy Brown says

I will definitely have to check this out. Our electricity bills have skyrocketed this year- and I don’t use any more energy than normal. In fact, I’ve upgraded to Energy Star appliances and everything- and yet my bill is killing us. The rates are jumping so bad!

  14. Cindy Demaree says

We need choices like this to level the playing field and create competition amongst providers.

  15. Beth Hargett says

Unfortunately, Current Choice is not available in my area (VA) but I left my email address so they could let me know when it does become available in my area. This was a very informative article, as I had no idea this was available anywhere. MD and PA are not far from my state!!!!

  16. amy says

i just got a letter in the mail explaining all my options and thier rates. it was real nice to see i already had the cheapest in my area.

  17. Dianna Thomas says

Ha!– Here in Idaho anything extra from the water to the wind is sent to CALIFORNIA– I don’t begrudge them, other than when our bill is $300.00 and we can not get any help. I true understand the heat they go through– But are winter are aweful here

  18. Mary Ann Woods says

I learned that it’s possible to choose your energy provider. I always thought you were stuck with only one. Thanks for the information, I’m very interested in how to do that!

  19. debbie johnson says

live in NC and don’t have that option. this would be so nice since i live off of disability and would not have to apply for leap every year.

  20. Robin Quick says

Wow I wish we had that here in Alabama! My power bill in the winter has damn near made us homeless! Its outrageous paying $400 in the winter for power! I would LOVE to have a choice of who provides my power! Thanks for sharing!

  21. Alicia Zirjacks says

It is not an option in my area but it is a really great idea. Hopefully it will become more widespread.

  22. Sarah says

We definitely need more options when it comes to electrical companies. Maybe this will eventually come to our area.

  23. Tracy Juliano says

Brand new ideas like this scare me a little bit. I’m always afraid of a “hidden catch,” but I’d be willing to try it if it was around for awhile. Either way, it’s not yet available in my area.

  24. Judy Sharpe Creditt says

This is only available in parts of Ct but I’m going to read up on it and see if it’s available here.

  25. Judy Bradley says

Sounds good, but does your power co get irritated because you chose a different supplier? I do not have that option here in FL. I wish I had another option about my cable/internet supplier – every month my bill is higher!

  26. Debi says

Wow – I had no idea such an option existed. Looking forward to it being available where I live. Thanks for posting!

  27. says

Wow, I found this so interesting! That in certain areas, subscribers can choose who they buy their electricity from! This is a great service. We should be able to have a choice!

  28. Dawn Sando says

I really wish this was available in my area!! I think everyone should have a choice in what company they want to spend their hard earned cash with!! Thanks for posting this information.

  29. Terri says

Very interesting. I’m in northeastern PA and can’t take advantage of this yet but I’ll keep checking and should be able to take advantage of it soon.

  30. Fern Lehmann says

Virginia needs deregulation of electricity, cable, and phone service (landlines); because we have NO choices in most areas of our state unless you happen to live in the cities, otherwise you have to deal with whatever company is available in your area. I am stuck with Southside Electric Coop, which is NOT the cheapest as they claim. I am stuck with Comcast Cable, who refuses to run a cable 500 feet to my home, and I am stuck with Verizon for my landline. Verizon has a HUGE monolpoly, which is *supposed* to be illegal in this country, but they are the ONLY provider in my rural area. It’s about time we stood up and said this NOT acceptable!!!

  31. michelle oakley warner says

thats pretty cool but not available in florida. when i t comes this way i will have to check it out

  32. Margaret Smith says

I’m very interested in this. I’m in NJ and glad to see that soon they’ll be in our area.

  33. Stephanie Phelps says

Wow thius sounds fantastic I know that we have just one choose and it stinks. They can basically charge what they want and charge a membership fee. I didn’t ask to join

  34. Pamela Halligan says

I would love to be able to try Current Choice. So glad it will soon be available in Maryland. Thanks for the information.

  35. Jill A. Collins says

Looks like something new is on the horizon. Hoping it comes to AR sometime in the near future!

  36. says

  37. Jennifer Hedden says

This is so great to be able to choose your electric provider. I hope this will become available in all states.

  38. stephanie says

I wish they had this in California! The region I live in has temps over 100 degrees in the summer. And with the economic pinch I ‘m currently experiencing, I can’t afford to run the air conditioner as the electricity rates increase during the summer months.

  39. sandy weinstein says

i would give anything to have anyone but wake electric-co-op, not only is mine more b/c wake electric buys from duke power and etc. but they have terrible service….i have lost tv’s, pc, backup battery-150.00 one blew, my security system screwed up….they have terrible service, dont care, supv dont call you back….i have tried to file complaints abt them, but when you have a co-op it is very difficult since you are considered an share holder and owner.

  40. Kristy says

I have heard really bad things about doing this type of thing…so not sure I would be on board if and when it comes to my area.

  41. Heather Rainey says

I wish we had that here in Arizona, in the summer time witch is 8 months out of the year my bill can get up to $420 in the super hot moths! I sure would like to change that!

  42. Cindy Merrill says

Switch plans? That would be dreaming big. The only option up here in Northern NY is National Grid: That may well explain why the previous owner of our cabin here in the woods left us 7 oil lamps.

  43. kimbuckjr says

I’m desperate to save money on our current electricity bill! Current Choice sounds like a company/program I really need to try out for myself.
Thank you so much for this VERY awesome review…I’m convinced!
    Take care – Kimbuckjr

  44. Sandy Brown says

thank you for this information. I went and checked my area with my zip code and it’ s not in my area yet, but I signed up my email to be alerted when it is. this is great thank you again.

  45. Rebecca Shockley says

I’ve always thought of having one provider for my Electric as a sort of monopoly, this is absolutely wonderful and I’m glad to know this is being offered. The only sad thing is it’s not available in Minnesota, darn it, thanks for bringing this to our attention thouigh

  46. Priscilla Morgan says

Make them compete like in the corporate world is a great idea! Wish it was available in Utah 🙁

  47. Patricia Edwards says

Customers are served better when there is NOT a monopoly because one company is not in Control of everything.

  48. Chris Shari Alligood says

This is great to know I never knew I had a buffet of choices can’t wait to look into this fyrther I love saving money!

  49. Jan White says

I wish they were available in Georgia and Alabama. We have huge electric bills in Alabama and no
    choice of who we use.

  50. Missy Conner Spivey says

Not available in my area either, but thank you for the information…and thank you for a chance at the giveaway! 🙂

  51. jessi taylor says

i love this idea, not only for the idea that it could save me money, but also for the idea that i could choose to get energy from non-nuclear and non-coal-fired plants… knowing that i’m using cleaner energy would be much more satisfying to me than saving a few dollars each month.

  52. Nichole miller shamblin says

I’d love to see it in Oklahoma! Thanks for the info I will for sure pass it on to family and friends.

  53. Maria Balmeo says

hmm… i wish they have it around my house.

    Thanks for opportunity,

  54. says

I am not sure it is here either, but my electricity provider is a co-op and I save that way I get discounts couple times a year and the longer I am with them the larger it gets.

  55. Lisa Burke Cook says

Wow this would be awesome,,always love to save money,,need to see if they offer it where I live! thanks

  56. Chevy Roper says

Awesome service! It would definitely help out so many people who are struggling during these hard times, myself included. Just wish that it was available in GA!

  57. Wendy says

I’ve never heard of such a thing – sounds like nothing but good! Will be anxious to see if it comes to my state (UT).

  58. stephanie miller says

this sounds great! i would love a break in my electricity bill! we pay a fortune! cant wait til this hits our area!

  59. Debbie Hogue says

That sounds like a novel idea. The way it is now, there is only one power company so we have no choice but to pay their rates but if there were several vying for customers, it seems that the power companies would try and lower their rates to get the most customers. I hope that comes to pass in Oregon

  60. says

I’d love to see what their rates are once they come to Texas. Our rates can be high down here, even with different electric companies keeping competition going.

  61. Bridget Williams says

I wish this were available where i live our rates are currently some of the highest in the nation. with any luck all states will adopt current choice one day so that we do HAVE A CHOICE!

  62. debra hunter says

  63. Danetta Young says

I love that they feature a side by side comparison. Those are always helpful when you’re trying to save!

  64. says

  65. andrea says

Not available in my area…and probably never will. This area has a monopoly and will not allow for anyone to cut into their profits

  66. Leslie G. says

Thanks for sharing this information with people. We evaluate our costs each year and hop from company to company. It’s all the same… and no matter what the same people maintain the lines. Why not chose the company with the lowest cost per kWh?

Your blog has so much great info!!

  67. says

Thanks for sharing this service – and mostly for making folks aware that they do have a choice. I’m in Illinois and we chose our own supplier a couple of years ago for Gas and Electric and love the savings!

  68. Debbie Langley says

  69. Michelle Macaluso says

This sounds great, sadly it is not available in AZ yet. The electricity bills in the summer are so high, it would be nice to bring it down a little.

  70. says

Thank you for the head’s up. I need to wait for them to come to New Jersey, but definitely worth checking out. We’ve actually been considering solar paneling, but that has some initial costs out of pocket before you start saving.

  71. kandace says

I cant find it for my area. My family loves to be green and save money. My 3 year old knows how to recycle.
