Bejeweled Board Game Review and Giveaway
Looking for a New and Different Board Game? Try Bejeweled!
My family enjoys the occasional board game, but my active kids often prefer to spend their time playing outdoors. However, we had a change of plans this spring when my seven-year-old daughter broke her arm. Suddenly, we found ourselves indoors with lots of time on our hands. That’s why I was thrilled when Hasbro gave us the opportunity to review their Bejeweled Board Game – a real-world version of the addictive online game.
As you can see, my daughter was equally thrilled:
Bejeweled is for ages 8+, but my 4-year-old daughter didn’t want to be left out. So the three of us set about opening, sorting, and arranging the game pieces. There are lots of pieces – 84 gems, 7 power gems, and 70 scoring coins, plus a bag and game base. The game was pretty easy to set up, although little fingers occasionally had some trouble lining the game pieces up just so.
Bejeweled: A Great New Board Game by Hasbro
Both girls have played Bejeweled and other similar tile swapping games on our phones and tablets, so they were familiar with the basic concept of the game – score points by lining up 3 jewels of the same color. The board game version is similar to the digital version, except that you are manually moving the game pieces. When you match 3 jewels in a row, you earn a coin. Earn extra coins by matching 4 or 5 jewels or by lining up one of the glittery power gems. You can play with up to 4 players.
My 7 year old was able to play mostly unassisted, but my 4 year old needed some help lining up the jewels and manipulating the game pieces. The game did not hold either child’s attention long enough to complete the game, but they are both a bit young for it. It’s not a long game, and a slightly older child would probably have enjoyed playing the game all the way through.
When I asked my girls what they thought of the game, my 7 year old said that it was “exquisite,” and my 4 year old said, “I like it.” This is a great, visually exciting game, and I think that they will enjoy it with their friends and family for years to come.
(One word of caution to parents: this game has over 150 small pieces, so keep that in mind during both assembly and clean-up.)
