Fashion Friday: When the Splurge & the Steal Are Out of Price Range

by Amee on March 12, 2010

I love Fashion but I hate paying tons of money to look great. I believe you need two things the knowledge of what looks good on you and the skill to find it for less. How do you make what you have work for season after season? I say buy classic clothes and add accessories.

I will tackle this spring’s flower trend using what I have to get the look I want for under $20.00.  I found this week’s inspiration in Marie Claire’s Article Splurge vs Steal. I thought their steals were still out of my budget. So I decided to to see what I could do to get the look for much less. I always say “it isn’t what you save, but what you spend.” Here is the Marie Claire Article

Amee

Jcrew SkirtSkirt,$98, J.Crew; jcrew.com
Belt, $98, Elie Tahari; elietahari.com for stores.
Flower Pins, $36 each, M&S Schmalberg; customfabricflowers.com

Total: $268

My option from my closet:

gap dress $4.00 GWGap dress Goodwill $4.00

Gold Belt $1.00 Goodwill

Flower pins less than  $1.00 each made from flower heads I got for $.85 and floral wire $1.00 and clips $1.99 for 12 ($3.00 just for the sake of argument)

Here is how I make it work for WORK!

I added a white blazer NWT (new with tags) from Goodwill $3.50 and the pins. I just moved them from the belt

You could also do this:

Just place the belt at your waist and add the flowers again

My bag of flower heads $.85 I bought them at Walmart. Then you just thread them using floral wire and attach the wire to a pin or clip. Voila! You have the look for $38.00 less.

I just twisted the wire around. Then I can wear it in my hair or put it on a scarf, hat, or my daughters headband.

AMOUNT SPENT: $11.50 total that means I didn’t spend $256.50 (and Marie Claire didn’t even have a shirt or a jacket)

So, for you I have a great pin that a fellow mom made. Leave a comment if you want it. I will draw a name on Sunday. Tell me how you would wear it!

You can buy your own by going to The Pleated Poppy. Thanks, Lindsey for giving us this pin to give to one of our readers!

I would wear it to work to make these still cold and wet days seem a little sunny!
